After years of hard work, the Marlins club will field its inaugural senior women’s side alongside five other Hunter-based clubs in the 2015 Black Diamond League.
Marlins AFL president Roger Price said the club had 15 players for the season opener and was very confident numbers would grow as word spreads.
“Five other clubs – Newcastle City, Lake Macquarie, Warners Bay, Wyong and Maitland – have indicated they will enter teams in the inaugural Black Diamond women’s competition,” Price said.
“This is the fourth women’s league to be up and running in NSW and the number of competitions is growing at a rampant rate throughout Sydney, Canberra and the Riverina.
“Numbers over the past five years have gone up in the Hunter and the other states have experienced similar growth patterns.”
Price said that since training began for the Marlins women in November, new faces had been trickling in week by week.
“We have women coming from Raymond Terrace and the great thing is that they are all super keen to learn while having a bit of fun.”
The competition will kick off on Saturday, May 2, with Nelson Bay playing Wyong Lakes at Dick Burwell Oval at 12.30pm.
